 About Captain Stu

Captain Stu are a 6 piece band based in Cape Town, South Africa. Their sound is described as a mix of ska, funk, and reggae with pop influences. They focus on having fun and enjoying the music wherever they go. The band members comprise of Nick Key (vocals), James Klopper (guitar and backing vocals), Ryan McArthur (bass/ upright), Clement Carr (saxophone/ keyboard), Jon Shaban (saxophone) and Devon Jones (drums). Their songs are fun, catchy and always get a smile on people’s faces.

The band used to be called ‘Captain Stu and the Llamas’ after watching ‘Dude Where’s My Car’.
It has recently been shortened to just ‘Captain Stu’ which helps with fitting their name on flyers
and posters. Captain Stu began in 2002 with founding members Nick and Ryan. While forming they went through various members and sounds and it wasn’t until 2004 they started to gig as a 7 piece. At the time most of the members were just 17.

They played throughout Cape Town and as gig offers increased their reputation amplified. It was then they decided to record their first album with the help of Lee Thomson and Ross Mc Donald from Hog Hoggidy Hog. Their first album entitled ‘Untold Tales’ attracted over 1300 fans to the launch which was released in July 2005. After the launch the band continued to perform throughout Cape Town. They have built up their base in the country and have been invited to perform at most major festivals. They have completed 2 tours around South Africa. The first was to Johannesburg and Durban and the second tour was with music channel MK. Here they joined 9 popular Afrikaans band and surprisingly found a new Afrikaans fan base from the tour. The tour will air as a documentary on MK later in the year. So far 2009 has been a busy year. They have been in the studio working on their second album which will be out later in the year and have released their first single entitled ‘Value Systems’. The music video for this included the band throwing paint at each other and having a vibe.

They make friends not fans so come
