Zula Sound Bar in Long street for the best in live entertainment. There are a variety of spaces to chill - from balcony to pool and fusball room to lounge and not forgetting the dance floor which doubles as a restaurant space.

PUB CRAWL By Bianca Coleman

WE CAPETONIANS can get very precious about our institutions
and landmarks, which is why the news that long-time venue
The Lounge had been taken over and renamed by a bunch of
foreigners took us aback. The cheek!

But it has to be said that since partners Vusa, Zoe and Arie
opened Zula Sound Bar in April, they have done a cracking job
with the place, and even though it might be vaguely
disloyal to say so, it's better than it was before.
They've even managed to incorporate various aspects
quite successfully, such as a bar, live music and restaurant.

One of the things I have always liked about this place,
in both it's incarnations, is the sprawl of interleading
rooms where the unsuspecting ( or extremely drunk )
patron can get lost.

Wander around and you'll find corners with big cosy couches,
alongside a room with a pool table and foosball.
Doors may or may not lead you to the toilets, and not all
stairways will take you where you expect to end up.
It's all part of the fun.

The balcony - now happily reinforced for a feeling of stability
and safety - remains one of the best places from which
to view the mayhem which is long street at 1 am.

The music at Zula is varied and it's becoming a popular place
for bands to have there CD launches, with at least two I can
think of coming up in the next week.

It's also a place where you,ll hear Vusa spinning some old school
rap like Sugarhill Gang, much to my delight. Now, if he can just
whip out Grand master Flash's The Message my joy will be complete.

As for the bar, well, the drinks are stupidly cheap. It's the only place on Long Street Iknow where you can get adouble Southern Comfort
and still get change from R20.

And you can get a mean plate of fried Calamari ( R40 )
long after most kitchens have closed. It's all good.
