Humble Beginnings
Wednesday 1st November 2006
Woohoo! Zula Culture is up and running and what an amazing night to start. Jolette and I were straight to the wine tasting table to down some Under Oaks in celebration and pure relief that it all came together. After knowing the struggles that creative people encounter on a daily basis, and how hard it is to get your work out there and create a living from your talent, we created Zula Culture, a free platform for people to promote their work to a wider audience.
Zula was filled with people who are starting their own humble beginnings in life with getting their work and messages out in Cape Town. Zo‘ and Vusa started the night off with original acoustic music while Jim and Kerry made heads turn by painting the natural beauty of Claire in sliver and black body paint.
In the exhibition room, Lara Kruger placed her heart on show with copper and lead art sculptures mounted on pictures woven with textures and inspirations, beautiful pieces that would bring love to anyone's space.
Nikki Lutzeler featured a range that that took intricate design which naturally fitted together and formed organic lights with a mystical glow.
Henk Hatting brought surrealism to the evening through his photographic images that forced everyone to look twice, a bright young photographer with a unique eye.
Clothing rails were filled with talent from Jolette Le Roux (one of Cape Town's best young undiscovered fashion designers, in my opinion). Feminine designs that when worn make you feel like a women in the strongest sense of the word, soft and enriching with inspiration from nature heavily featured in her work.
The Entertainers inspired us with their pure dedication to music. Transporting a full drum kit and back line on the train in wheelie bins to get to the gig, they proved to everyone that creativity is in our blood and something that drives us though all obstacles in life. Huge amounts of respect were given to them while they raised the roof and got us all dancing. We look forward to seeing the progress of a band that, in my mind has got it spot on: they do it for the love, pure love! A collection went round after and they all managed to get a taxi home, so the love came back, simple isn't it? Cape Town, support and enrich the people who make you look sideways!
Peace & Love,
Zo‘ & Jolette |
