Zula Culture 2nd of May
Something from nothing
Z: So this month was really something from nothing!
After having one of those months that tests your sense of humour, and hospital trips to Jolette (who is back and fighting fit now) We then had the majority of this months line up cancel the DAY before the event. Funny thing but I still managed to laugh, maybe I have resigned myself to Cape Towns slack attitude to commitments or maybe I had finally cracked. It’s the most frustrating thing when artiste cancel so late as it makes it impossible to give the opportunity to someone else, and I’m usually left begging someone to fill the place so Zula doesn’t look slack. Shape up Cape Town, it’s time to prove to that you carry the title of Arts and culture capital for a good reason
V: Yes Indeed. I must say though, that the performances were once again moments of true beauty. First up we had a fine acoustic performance by My Man and Ou. They glided beautifully between afro-centric mbaqanga township fire songs, reggae and even a bit of blues.
Z: They had such a lovely energy together, even when they were playing in totally different keys,
V. That’s where the blues came into it.
Z: The blues indeed, but it did feel like the song lent itself to it anyway. I loved the way they pushed the musical, to the theatrical and comedy. They became engaging with the audience and their characters grew and had everyone smiling.
V. After this fine performance it was my absolute pleasure to invite Nonhlanhla Mditshwa onto the stage to perform a very powerful and heartfelt poem about , I guess about her inner self would you not say?
Z: Her inner self and life around her. She is an inspiration to young South African women. She has a clear passion and strong plan and focus to achieving her goals. They work as a collective. Uqa-Uka is a creative movement and fashion being one of the elements. We have different designers, Ovastand by Nosipho, Truly Me by Danielle, shoes from Roper House of Fashion, T-shirts by Triple Queen Productions and Joburg based Label 25 Hour Toyi-Toyi. Uqa- Uka creative movement founders are; Nosipho- who makes all the beaded jewellery. Danielle Roberts- designs clothing.
Nonhlanhla Mditshwa- public relations. nosiphod@gmail.com , d.roberts7@yahoo.com , nonhlanhla.mditshwa@gmail.com , www.myspace.com/nonhlanhla .
They will be a regular feature at Zula Culture as they are hungry for the platform and professional to the end, a pleasure to work with. Did you like the fashion show?
V: Yes I most certainly did. It was really refreshing to have the show performed amongst the audience; it really gave the clothes a sense of purpose if you know what I mean. I really like the bead designs like the tie and the waistcoat I thought they were quite innovative.
The stage was then host to young Megan who gave a lightly nervous interview beforehand but honestly has no need for pre show nerves because Megan has a fabulous voice. She started nervously but ended up showing us that there really is a young entertainer with the vocal talents to match simply bursting to show the world her Aretharesque capabilities. If there is any criticism I must level at the band it is that they need fine tuning, tightening here and tweaking there and Megan needs to have the belief in her own ability to end songs as ell as she begins them. Lots of hardwork Megan but nobody said it was easy and you will definitely get there soon!
Z: The night was supported by Du Preez wines who poured beautiful wines to taste in the exhibition room. Mopp featured work on one of the main walls of the exhibition room. They selected some of Cape Town’s finest up and coming photographers and displayed their biographies and creative message. All of the exhibition will be on display through out the whole of May, so check it out.
A big Thank you to William from Eagle Lighting on Long Street. People, he is the man who knows about all your lighting needs.
